New Timeline Design for Facebook Pages - 2012

12 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 12:00 PM

facebook pages timeline designOn March 30, 2012, a new design is arriving for Facebook fan pages, which is strikingly similar to Facebook Timeline.

The Timeline layout will be replacing the old Facebook page Wall.

When the FB Timeline was first introduced, I realized the potential it had for artists. It has a large introductory cover photo, and images are one of the main attractions.

I wrote a full post on how artists may use FB Timeline for promoting art: Facebook Timeline for Art Marketing.

But, Facebook has strict rules regarding promotion on personal profiles. These rules do not apply for business pages!

Since the new FB page design is arriving soon, I will give a brief overview of what we have to look forward to.

Goal Setting – How to Achieve Your Goals

3 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 2:56 AM

goal setting successGoal setting is instrumental to artistic success. Most of us desire to be a famous artist who is self-supporting. This may seem a great distance away but is achievable only by setting objectives that will eventually bring us the to that final destination. With each small success, comes a growing confidence and reassurance that progress is being made. When you finally make that final goal, stand proud, and look back at the steps and accomplishments that brought you here.

Below are tips and advice for goal setting. Read it over, and reread it. Then, start now in making artistic goals to advance your art career.

Juried Art Competition Entry Tips 2012

4 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 4:10 PM

juried art competitionI recently posted a list of websites that display directories of call for entry, art competitions, art prizes, and more. Go here to view this helpful post…   Call for Entries 2012

There are literally thousands of art contests yearly, but not all of them are not worthy of joining. Many may have requirements that do not match your style of art.

Others may be unworthy simply because they are overpriced, or the art will not be exposed to the proper audience. It is important to do some background research and preparation before applying for an art competition.

How to Make Signatures - Photoshop Tutorials – Part 1

0 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 7:40 PM

signature brush photoshopAfter a painting is completed, the common practice is to add a signature to the front. As we discussed in a previous article (How to Sign a Painting or Drawing), signing an artwork is important for identifying the artist. Of course, not all artists like having a signature on the front. Some decide to place it on the back of the artwork instead.

But, what about digital art, photographs, and artworks created on the computer?  You must have seen paintings and photographs with digital signatures.

How do they sign their artworks in digital format? There are numerous software that provides this task, but the one we will be discussing for sig tutorials is the ever popular Photoshop.

Question - Should Artists Create Smaller Artworks to Sell More?

11 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 4:53 PM

small scale artworksMany artists have struggled with this question, myself included. I have created many smaller sized paintings in the past. These generally sell much faster than my larger scaled artworks, mainly because they are cheaper, easier to hang, easier to transport, etc.

But, my tendency is to work BIG! I love the freedom of movement that a large canvas brings, but because of my process and attention to detail, they take a long time to produce. Thus, I have to charge seemingly outrageous prices, making these paintings more difficult to sell.

What do you think of creating small scale artworks to sell more?

I am interested in hearing your thoughts and experience.

Child Art – Watching Children Drawing - Imitation and Simplification

0 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 12:12 PM

My children love to watch me drawing and painting. They are full of questions about what they see there. They do not see all the years of training and practice it took to be able to sketch that fast. In their eyes it is magic.

Sometimes I like to sit down with them and watch them create art. They can have a full drawing completed in a short time and still be recognizable. For a person, it is often the bare minimal – circle for the head (with circles for the eyes and nose, and a curved smile), and simplified arms, legs, and body. I think we can learn a lot from child drawings. They are very minimal in nature. They do not include unnecessary details, only what is needed.

Should Art Sale Prices be Listed on Artist Websites?

0 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 4:19 PM

art sale pricesWe all know it is important to have our artworks priced. Should the prices be placed alongside artworks on art websites? There are definitely good arguments for and against.

The first thing to consider is why you are posting art online. Is it to sell art, or simply to receive encouraging feedback? If it is the latter, then it is important to include easy to find contact information for pricing inquiries.

If you are represented by an art gallery, then please consult your contractual information before selling through your site. Some galleries may not allow it at all, while others might still require a percentage of art sales.

How to Add Employer to Facebook Timeline to Promote Facebook Pages

0 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 11:48 AM

add employer facebookMany artists are discovering Facebook fanpages as an extremely effective method for promoting their artworks, along with receiving plenty of friendly feedback.

But, one of the main problems many artists are having is encouraging Timeline friends to visit their fanpages. Most have listed the Facebook like page in their About section, but this appears on a separate page altogether, and is frequently visited.

How do artists make their Facebook fan page appear right above the Timeline? There happens to be one easy way to do this by changing your employer to your fanpage!

I will show all of you how to do this in the following Facebook tutorial.

Before reading on, please check out How to Get Likes for Facebook Pages, which displays a full list of helpful ways of driving visitors to your FB like page.

Interested people may also visit our tutorial How to Create Welcome Page for Facebook and How to Add Rss Feed to Facebook Page.

How to Write a Critique of Art – Tips

2 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 5:20 PM

art critique tipsA critique is an endeavour to comprehend an artwork and understand the intent of the artist. They take two forms: written reviews and public critiques (ie art class critiques). Public critiques may be a very intimidating experience, especially if you are shy or do not like public speaking. I’ve always preferred written critiques, since I have the time to gather thoughts, and form my own opinions on the piece.

This is the Feldman Method of critiquing art, which is Description, Analyzing, Interpretation, and Evaluation. This is the method that I was personally taught in art school

What follows are general guidelines for the critiquing of art which may benefit whether you are an art school student, or want to write about art on an art blog.

Answer only the questions that relate to the artwork being reviewed when writing about art.

How to Plan an Art Show

4 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 10:12 PM

gallery art showPlanning an art show takes much preparation. There are a lot of things to consider, from packaging the artwork for transport to deciding the correct placement in the exhibition space. My first solo show was in a tiny coffee shop during my art school years (1998). I learned a lot from that first experience, especially from the mistakes I made. My biggest mistake was not planning it well beforehand.

But, I have learned in subsequent showings to always prepare well in advance.

In this article, I detail all the things an artist should plan, for a successful art gallery showing. Some of these may apply to “open house” exhibitions, and displays in public venues as well. Also, you may not hold the whole burden, since the curator is often responsible for some of this.

Exhibbit Online 3D Virtual Gallery Tour

0 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 3:44 AM

exhibbit 3d gallery logoExhibbit is an online virtual gallery whereby artists display entire shows of artworks in 3D space.

The created exhibition can be shared with friends by means of Twitter, Facebook fanpages, Linkedin, email, and more. The virtual gallery may also embed in your own art website.

Exhibbit can be incredibly useful for art galleries and curators, and especially artists of all skill levels. Emerging artists who have not experienced a gallery show may use Exhibbit to become familiar with the placement of artworks in a space. More experienced artists may utilize the virtual gallery to expose art to an international audience.

When I first viewed an Exhibbit exhibition, I was very impressed with the presentation, and how easy it was to navigate to certain artworks. I explain how to navigate around the Exhibbit environment next.

Setup your account by clicking the Register at the bottom of that page. Fill out the form and wait for an email confirmation. Click the link in the email and change your password right away.

Painting With Light - John Neville Cohen Photography

I was a keen amateur photographer and around the age of 23 (1963), I invented and perfected a very different technique. It was based on the idea of photographing projected images that were projected on to other things, sometimes more than one projector was used. This was at a time when no one owned computers.

For most of my life I was involved in business and photography was just my hobby. However for the last 15 years, before I retired, I became professional and ran a successful photographic design studio.

Now having retired I have worked with many of my old transparencies in Photoshop and created these limited edition pictures (only 8 of each will be sold)

How to Sell Art at Redbubble – Tips

10 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 2:35 PM

redbubble art iconMany artists around the world are utilizing Redbubble as a means of selling art through prints and other products. I first joined about a month ago, and have found the community there very friendly and encouraging.

Redbubble is quite similar to Fine Art America in that they are a print on demand service, and have much of the same features.  They do offer a much wider range of products for the selling of art through prints though.

Artworks can be transferred to t-shirts, greeting cards, stickers, iPod cases, post cards, posters, calendars, and kids clothing. Art related products include photographic prints and canvas prints. Prints may also be matted, mounted, and framed.

I have highlighted a few of the main features of Red bubble, and how to effectively use this online gallery for art promotion and selling art.

Question - How Long did it Take You to Create That?

4 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 9:39 PM

question how longPeople have asked this question to me many times. They often ask me personally, How long did it take you to draw/paint that? My natural inclination is to tell them exactly how long, in technical terms. I often reply with This painting took me about two weeks. Of course, most of my larger paintings take much longer. Plus, the fact that I create several artworks simultaneously, makes it more difficult to quantify an exact time.

So, I have been thinking about different ways to answer this question. It is a valid question after all. The person asking is obviously interested in hearing what I have to say. But, in stating an exact time, I am a little worried about the impression it might give.

  1. This drawing took me one hour to complete

The person asking may think my drawing is not worth as much as one that took me a full day. The quality may be less, but expressive drawings are often produced very fast and convey more emotion. Should it sell for a cheaper price just because it was created faster?

  2. This painting took me a full month

I have a few paintings that took a month to create. There is even one that I have worked on for the past 3 years, and I am just putting on the finishing touches. But, it is impossible for me to say exactly how much time I spent creating. On one day I may work on a certain painting for a few hours, then place it back so the paint may dry, before reworking. I may not return to that painting for a couple days or more. Most of the time I like to create a few artworks simultaneously.

If I give this answer in this case I fear I may not be entirely truthful.

Can you see the dilemma? I think most artists have had to deal with this question.

A Priority List for Online Artist Success

2 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 4:29 PM

artist success list

Many artists who first venture into the online world of promoting art feel very overwhelmed and end up giving up. With so many websites to join, and so many methods of art promotion, it is very easy to lose priority.

It is important to maintain focus on why you are here. Why are you marketing your art to the online world? Is it to gather a following? Are you hoping to sell your artworks?  Are you simply interested in finding encouragement and inspiration from other artists? Whatever your answer, even if all of the above, it is essential to always remember this central purpose.

Always keep this in the back of your mind while promoting art. Distraction is easy when visiting other artist websites, commenting on forums, replying to requests at Facebook, checking emails, etc. Everything requires a certain time commitment. The best way to be a truly successful online artist and to maintain focus is to prioritize your time. Aim for the things that work for you, and spend less time at the rest.

What follows is a list of recommended priorities for online artist success:

  1. Building and maintaining an artist website
  2. Exhibiting art at free online portfolios and print on demand websites
  3. Posting art and participating in social networks, art community forums, art groups, etc.

Deviantart Groups and Artist Deviations

0 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 6:38 PM

deviantart groupsMost online artists have probably heard of Deviantart. It is the biggest site of its kind, showcasing art by over eighteen million artists of all styles from around the world.

Deviant art is not discriminatory at all about the quality or type of art exhibited there. Anyone 13 years and over can open a Deviantart account, and present their creations for all to see.

The work displayed is varied, including manga, body art (tattoos), literature, photography, paintings, sculpture, and more.

Deviant art can be especially useful for artists who take advantage of the groups feature. There are currently over 157,000 Deviantart art-groups, so artists should have no trouble finding appropriate categories for sharing their style of art.

Most groups allow a certain number of submissions daily. Posting regularly exposes art to a much wider and varied audience than any other similar site (ie Fine Art America). Actually, by exhibiting at Deviant art groups, many may visit the artist’s profile. Including a link at that profile pointing to an artists website is a commonly utilized method of drawing visitors and art buyers to a separate portfolio.

I will show you how to join and submit to groups, but first will explain how to create a new Deviantart profile.

  2. Branding: To help others recognize you by viewing your logo.

Creating a Fanpage Welcome for Facebook With Pagemodo

9 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 11:40 AM

facebook pageA Facebook welcome page is the first page viewed by visitors to a fanpage.  Having a good welcome page is one of the best methods for receiving Facebook likes

Imagine a welcome page as the cover of a book, or the homepage of a website. The cover of a book often displays a visual summary, along with a title, of what the book is about. The best book covers invoke curiosity, and invite us to open up the pages. A welcome page for Facebook should be no different.

What are the features of an optimally presented Facebook artist welcome page?

  1. Large images
The artworks should be relatively large, and not small thumbnail images. They should be the main focus on the page, and should visually “wow” the viewer into wanting to see more.
  2. Choose the best artworks
Art chosen should be the most successful and inviting pieces of the artist.
  3. A good title
The title should be descriptive of the art displayed.
  4. A brief bio
A very short artist statement or bio is often displayed at artist Facebook welcome pages. This should only be a brief summary of the artwork, and influence readers into wanting to learn more about the art.

How do Artists Create Art Masterpieces

7 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 3:34 AM

rembrandt masterpiece studioI have been thinking about what constitutes a masterpiece, and how to create them. I have seen many great works of art, in museums and galleries as well as on the internet.

Many artworks online have made me stop and say “Wow!”, while others I just pass by, by clicking the “next” arrow. It is no different viewing paintings and sculptures in museums and galleries. There are some that suddenly stir my imagination as I stand before them.

I instantly know in my heart that I am standing in front of a work of true art… a masterpiece.

I have been wondering a couple of things about masterpieces.

  • What constitutes an art masterpiece?
  • How do artists create a master piece?

Treasrz – Crowdboosting Site for Artists

0 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 4:01 PM

treasurz crowdboostingUPDATE:

The Treasrz website is no longer active. Please disregard this post.

Treasrz is a new crowdboosting site for artists and those who love art, which is still in the beta phase. Very little information about this new art marketing source is known at the moment.

The little we do know makes Treasurz seem very promising for any artist who plans to sell artworks online.

What is crowdboosting?

For Treasurz, it seems to involve allowing as many people as possible to promote and sell artworks, which are made available through the site. These can be art lovers, online curators, and anyone who sees the opportunity of promoting and making a small profit from the work of artists.

Online Art Theft – What to do About it

1 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 3:57 PM

art theft onlineIt is often upsetting when artists discover their creations are stolen, and used by someone else online. Sometimes the artworks are simply displayed on another website, without any credit to the artist. Other times the art theft may be more blatant, such as selling the image on postcards, posters, etc .

One of the best copy protection measures is to have a low resolution images, but even this isn’t failsafe.

At lower resolutions, the artwork is still large enough to be sold on keychains, ipod cases, greeting cards, and similar items. Also, watermarking may easily be cropped out with a photo editing program.

This is one of the easiest ways for artists to find stolen art displayed on other websites:

What should artists do next, after they find out their art is used by someone else without permission or credit?

We owe it to our loyal readers, subscribers, and those who have been featured in the Artist Spotlite.

Pinterest Art - Online Pinboarding

14 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 5:26 PM

logo pinterestI recently joined Pinterest after receiving an invite. I get invitations from social networks all the time, so usually pay no attention to most of them. But, I am so glad I took the time to actually explore the site to discover the incredible networking and art promotional possibilities Pinterest holds for me and my art.

You may be saying “Not another social network!” It’s kind of difficult to be active in all of them. But I think Pinterest may be especially useful for artists, especially when used in conjunction with Google+ and Facebook.

Why should artists be excited about joining a new online pinboard website such as Pinterest?

The sheer graphical nature is what attracts most. Simply do a search, and the resulting page is literally filled to the brink with images from Pinterest members representing pins and collections.

Without the users, which this virtual pinboard website does not lack, Pinterest would be a barren wasteland. The only graphics here is the user generated content, and there is plenty of it.  The emphasis certainly is imagery, whereas the focus on other networking sites is often a mix of text, links, graphics, and sometimes video.

There are many reasons for artists to be very excited about Pinterest, besides what I have already mentioned, and I will list them below.

How to Add RSS Feed to Facebook Page

0 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 1:26 AM

facebook pages rssMany artists are using Facebook pages as a means of keeping fans updated of new artworks, art gallery shows, or whatever else they would like to share with fans. Facebook fan pages can be very effective when used simultaneously with art blogs. Blog posts may be easily shared by installing a Facebook share button, and using it to post updates.

But, this action has to be completed every time a new blog post is created. Have you ever wished the blog updates could be automatically posted to your Facebook fanpage, profile, etc.? This would certainly save much time and effort, time that could be spent in the studio creating art.

Well, there happens to be a convenient Facebook app called Rss Graffiti that allows automatic posting of blog updates through RSS or Atom, without even logging into your account. Rssgraffiti is also very handy for the sharing of Tweets, Youtube videos, Google+ posts, etc.

Basically, any site that include Rss or Atom feeds may be shared through Rss graffiti. The RSS feed may be posted on any Facebook wall, be it your profile, Facebook fan page, events, groups, and application profiles. Also, more than one feed can be setup to post on an individual wall.

How does Rss graffiti apply to artists?

  • Artblogs – Artists who own artblogs can instantly post blog updates.
  • Youtube videos – Art videos of studio tours, tutorials, and slideshows can be shared.
  • Rss Graffiti Twitter Integration – Automatically post new tweets from Twitter.
  • Google+ – Posts shared on your Google plus stream may be cross-posted to Facebook.
  • Online gallery websites – Share new additions to print on demand sites such as Fine Art America.

Below is a full tutorial for setting up Rssgraffiti for a Facebook fanpage, profile or group.

Photoshop Create Watermark Tutorial

6 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 2:14 PM

photoshop create watermarkArt is being stolen everyday on the internet. As artists who post artworks online, we need to protect ourselves from art thieves.

I have even heard of people stealing images and selling them on Etsy products and elsewhere. Although this has not been personally experienced (not that I know of anyway), I have found my art on other websites without permission or any credit.

How do we as online artists protect ourselves from this kind of thievery? We have an entire article devoted to the subject: How to Prevent Art Theft Online

One of these effective methods for protecting our art, mentioned in this tutorial, is watermarking!

Below is a complete article on how to watermark artwork photos using Photoshop.

Join Our Google Plus Artist Circle

10 comments Posted by Graham Matthews at 12:46 AM

artists googleWhat are Google Plus circles?

Circles are basically groups of gathered Google+ members. A circle can be based on anything, such as photographers, abstract artists, musicians, famous people, etc.

The interesting thing about these groups is that the people inside them never know they are placed there. The category is kept completely private.

Sharing circles
Sharing circles is a relatively new feature for Google plus. The benefit is that other Googleplus members who are interested in a specific niche, can follow all the people without having to search for individuals. This is actually advantageous for artists. Several artist and photographer circles exist on Google+ already. Being a member of one or many of them greatly increases the chance of gathering a large Google following. I have been very fortunate to be added to some very wonderful circles, filled with very talented artists from around the world. As a result, I now regularly receive 20-30 followers daily.

The great thing about circles is that once they are shared, others can share them too. If this happens enough times, there is a clear viral possiblity.

Read on as we explain how you can create a circle of your own, and share it with your friends on plus Google. We also give some helpful tips on how to format text in posts. You will also have a chance of being in the Artpromotivate Artist Circle by simply posting your profile link below.

Godaddy Domain Redirection – Blogger and Wordpress

godaddy domainAt Artpromotivate, we believe in sharing useful tips and advice that can greatly help our artist readers. In the past we have focused on such topics as How to use Google Image Search to check for stolen images, and Naming Artworks.

We believe that good custom domains hold similar importance to the success of online artists who have a portfolio site on a free service. Web hosting is not even needed if the site is already created. No files have to be moved or transferred, just the domain has to be redirected.

If later on the artist decides that they want a hosted website with Hostgator, Godady, or many other premium web hosting companies, that url can easily be redirected to the site, without losing subscribers and search engine ranking.

This is the last post of this short series about the advantages of a custom domain over a free subdomain, such as Blogspot or the free Wordpress. If interested in learning more about custom domains, and how to create a good one for your artblog or website, then kindly go here:
