A very Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers and grandmothers reading this today. Motherhood has been a topic of many famous paintings and sculptures throughout history.
Mothers deserve to be honoured today, and everyday throughout the year.

Innocence (L’innocence) - William Adolphe Bouguereau (1893)
William Adolphe Bouguereau was a popular French traditionalist and painter.
He often used classical and mythological themes and made common use of the female form in his realistic paintings.
His painting here entitled Innocence depicts a mother holding a lamb and her baby, both symbols of innocence.

The Cradle - Berthe Morisot (1872)
This beautiful painting by French artist Berthe Morisot features a mother gazing at her newly born baby in a cradle.
A white see through veil surrounds and protects the baby. The impressionist painting can be seen at Musee d'Orsay, Paris, France.

Tahitian Woman and Two Children - Paul Gauguin (1901)
This post-impressionist painting by Paul Gauguin features a Tahician woman posing with two of her children.

This is a painting of Gabrielle Renard (Renoir’s wife’s cousin) and infant son Jean Renoir

The Young Mother - Mary Cassatt (1900)
This is a beautiful rendition of motherhood by American impressionist artist Mary Cassatt, and is one of many paintings she did on this theme.
Other of her paintings with the theme of motherhood include Summertime, The Child’s Bath, Under the Horse Chestnut Tree, Maternité, Madame Meerson and Her Daughter, and Jules Being Dried by His Mother.
