Cloudy Night

I started painting "professionally" just last year. I had painted in high school but stopped after I got married. When Facebook came around I made an album of some paintings I had done. People really liked them and a friend of mine commissioned a piece from me. So I quit working retail to try to make a living with my art.

Can you tell us about your first memory creating art as a child?

Wow, I can't remember that far back!

Do you have music playing in the background when painting?

I like quiet while I paint. If anything I'll have the t.v. on in the background.

Do you have a job outside of art?

I am currently not working. I worked retail for many years and I'll never do it again.

Creative Process

When I get an idea, I might do a small rough sketch, think about what colors I want to use and go to work. It usually doesn't end up the way I imagined it in my head though.

What are you inspired by?

Nature is a big inspiration. There are so many pretty landscapes and skyscapes and flowers and trees and animals!

Exhibitions

From August 25 through October 20, 2013, I had 3 pieces on display at the Anderson Arts Center in Kenosha, WI.

Have you been selling your art?

Most of my sales have been through Facebook. I've also sold some through my website, art shows, and the gallery that I'm a member of Antioch Fine Arts Foundation.

What do you do to promote art on the internet?

I have an artist page on Facebook. I regularly post new works to that page and special promotions I may have.

Can you tell us about an admired artist of yours?

I recently discovered Eduardo Rodriguez Calzado on Facebook. His work is amazing! He uses brilliant colors and lots of detail with small geometric shapes to create paintings with movement and light. So beautiful!

Any embarrassing moments?

If I did I wouldn't tell all you people about it!

If you had a chance to do things over again, what would you do differently?

I would go to art school. I never thought I would try to make a living with my paintings. I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up until I was 40!

Any plans for the future?

Lana Arft I want to keep improving and find my style. Right now I'm experimenting and trying new things, but as Artpromotivate has said, I need to find and stick with one style.

Can you share some advice for emerging artists?

Social media is your friend! You can reach thousands of people and it's free!
