Jennifer Kelly Hoskins Blind Eyes

"Blind Eyes"
This piece is about being blind to how good life is.
Jennifer Kelly Hoskins

Introduction:

I was born in 1993, grew up involved with art, and am now working on getting my BFA from the University of South Carolina. I've been an art instructor, freelance artist, and am currently studying art abroad in Florence, Italy. My mother, and grandmother are both very creative so in that sense artistic ability runs in my family. On the other hand my brother and sister are much taller than me and more athletic as is my dad's side of my family so feeling that contrast I just went ahead and emerged myself into art knowing that my calling fell more into the creative side of things.

First experience creating.

My first experience creating happened pretty young. I will say that although I've always been artsy one of my defining moments as an artist was in high school. I was doodling in class without really thinking anything of it. Later, I showed my drawings to my best friend and she said, "This is actually really good." That's when I started to give art more time and effort.

Music and Art

I love, love, love music. Ranging all the way from Colbie Callait to Tyler the Creator. Toro y Moi is also one of my favorites as well as Tove Lo and Rihanna.

Biggie

"Biggie"
Jennifer Kelly Hoskins
Music has a huge influence on my work. This is the proof.

If you have a job besides being an artist, can you tell us about it?

Currently I am a student, studying abroad in Florence, Italy. Before this I was an art instructor as well as a freelance artist taking on different commissions.

What are you trying to convey to viewers through your art?

In my art, I'd like to convey a sense of otherworldliness. If others get a sense of another reality that can temporarily help them to dismiss their own problems then I'd consider my art successful.

Tell us about your creative process.

Once somethings has set off the spark of inspiration for a new piece I like to get started immediately. Ballpoint pen is one of my favorite mediums for quick, detailed work. I like to finish my pieces in one sitting (which can be up to 8 hours at a time) although on my recent pieces "Blind Eyes" took about 8 months to complete.

Wisdom

"Wisdom"
This piece is about how growth and wisdom generally come with age.

What things inspire you to create art?

Music videos, music, nature, other peoples passions

What exhibitions have you had?

In 2011 I had an exhibition at The Old Mill in Lexington, South Carolina.

Have you sold any of your artworks?

Yes, the buyer saw my work on instagram then we arranged the details through email.

How do you promote your art on the internet?

On tumblr, instagram, twitter, Facebook, behance, deviant art

Tell us about influences:

My Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Art teachers, Professors, Musicians mentioned above. My influences could be anything as long as it hits me in a certain way. I never know what it will be. Recently, I was watching a music video and just felt this really strong urge to stop what I was doing and go draw.

Please recommend another artist you admire:

One of my favorite artists is Bec Winnel. Her portraits are very delicate and feminine. She creates such realistic features that the first time I saw her work I was in awe.

Tell us something interesting in your life:

So, I already mentioned that I'm in Italy now studying. Let's see. I'll go with an achievement. I made the dean's list the past two years.

Do you have an embarrassing moment in your life?

When am I not having an embarrassing moment? Okay, so being in a big city, I never know if I might by some crazy chance be in the same place as a celebrity (okay this sounds kind of ridiculous but follow me). So, last week I was out on my own exploring the city and found this little shoe store, emphasis on the little. I walk in and there's one couple inside. So I'm just checking out shoes, and the couple is talking, and all of a sudden it hits me. This voice is familiar. He sounds just like Jude Law. Oh my gosh. Keep in mind (ironically) facial recognition and voice recognition are not my forte. So, inside I'm freaking out. And I decide I have two options, I can either look and wait for him to turn around so I can see if I'm right or I can mind my business and walk out. Of course, I turn around completely, and stare at this mans back until he turns around and looks me right in the eyes. At that point I realize I was wrong, and also this guys girlfriend is probably thinking back off. Anyway, I ended up just walking out of the store, laughing to myself.

If you could live your life over again, would there be anything you would do differently?

I would probably take more AP classes in High School (Kind of random I know). And also I would care less what people think and stop comparing myself to other people. Life's to short to worry so much about impressing other people. Oh and also, let it go.

What plans do you have for the future of your art?

Short term: I have an art show planned for this spring when I get home.

Long term: Grad school, album covers, solo exhibitions, clothing graphics, etc. Anything to where I get to be around cool people.

Do you have any good advice for emerging artists?

Jennifer Kelly HoskinsYes, feel free to express yourself in anyway you feel with your art and don't worry about fitting into a category. Also, don't worry about rejection. Keep on going.
