One time a sketchbook was the only way to express ideas on the go. With the digital revolution and mobile devices, several apps have arisen which allow artists to create art – anytime, any place - right from an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. Some of these apps allow digital painting and drawing, which when completed can be instantly uploaded to Facebook, Twitter or even emailed.

Art Apps for Artists
Art Studio – draw, paint and edit photo
Artists can use Artstudio to draw and paint anywhere. It allows uploading and manipulation of photographs. Artstudio has 16 tools: select, wet paintbrush, pencil, dry paintbrush, dots, spray, eraser, bucket fill, smudge, gradient, clone, text, heal, dodge/burn, blur/sharpen, and eyedropper. Artstudio also has 450 brushes (150 are in the free version, 300 in the paid). There are many other features such as guidelines, grid, select tool text tool, stroke settings, layers, filters, and much more. Artstudio is a powerful tool for creating art on the go.
This app is optimized for iPhone5, but also compatible with iPod Touch and iPad.
Brushes 3 allows painting anywhere with your iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. It allows creation of paintings up to 2048p x 2048px and has unlimited redo and undo. Only one layer is available in the free version, but 10 can be purchased within the app. The brushes in this app can be enlarged as much as 512px x 512px. Other features include adjustable color opacity and brush settings, simulated pressure, 14 brush shapes, etc. This app also allows Tweeting and posting of paintings to Facebook.
If you are a watercolor painter, you will love Auryn Ink. Artists can easily create watercolor paintings with fingers or a stylus. The colors move and blend just like in a physical watercolor painting. Auryn Ink allows artists to select type of paper, adjust brushes and select a canvas. There are effects that simulate real watercolor painting, such as air drying, glazing effects, lifting color with water, etc.

ArtRage for iPhone
This app simulates the process of painting. ArtRage keeps track of the amount of paint used, and how much it has dried. Colors can be blended on the canvas while painting. More paint can be applied for using a palette knife. Simulated canvas grain affects the look of brush strokes.
Features include layers, importing photos, tracing images, etc. ArtRage includes the tools oil brush, palette knife, paint tube, inking pen, pencil, crayon, and eraser.
This app is compatible with iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
This app uses colored pencils instead of paint. There are a range of options here for choosing pencils and blender tools. Colored pencils has a range of canvas sizes, layers support, color history, zooming in, mixing colors, and more.
When your artwork is finished, it can be sent via email or uploaded to Twitter and Facebook.
Colored Pencils is available on iPad, IPod Touch and iPhone.
ColorSchemer is meant for artists who use various painting palettes. This app includes over 1 million palettes from the COLOURlovers community. There is also a social aspect to this app – leave feedback on the palettes, or love and fave.
ColorSchemer can also be used to create palettes. Use the color wheel or create them from photos.
