Indigo © Debra Purcell
This 20x16 inch acrylic on canvas painting show the serenity of an indigo bird resting upon a branch. I attempted to create prospective of distance. It also represents how this tiny creation does not worry and understands that God will provide.
I am a self taught artist from Lakewood, Ohio who has been painting for only 6 1/2 years. I am formerly trained as a RN with certifications in chemical dependency counseling and in April 2012 started dedicating myself to a painting career.
First experience creating.
I had moved to the West Palm Beach area of Florida and did not know anyone. To stay busy, I bought poster paints from Walgreens. After experimenting a little, I said to myself, "Ye gads.... There is something here."
What music do you like to have playing while creating art?
I go from Bob Dylan to Celtic music. What a difference!
If you have a job besides being an artist, can you tell us about it?
Housewife and mother. I paint daily. Love to take care of the home, my husband and children in between each color drying!
Regatta Town © Debra Purcell
This 36x36 inch acrylic on canvas show the joy of Regatta Day in this tiny village on the lake.
What are you trying to convey to viewers through your art?
I am motivated by a spiritual joy that I hope to convey in each piece.
Tell us about your creative process, from the beginning of a typical piece to its completion.
Each time that I begin a painting, I watch my image change as the work interacts with art itself. A language has emerged for me and I enjoy a playful dialog with each attempt. The discipline of the craft is met with the interactive joy of the 'now-ness' of each piece.
Inspirations
Spirituality of the world around me.
Exhibitions
I have had several local and national exhibitions just this year. My first solo exhibit, locally, is scheduled for November 2013. The most influential exhibit I have participated in was RAW: Cleveland Presents En Masse. The "togetherness" and networking of creatives was amazing and an experience I will never forget.
This complex 26x16 inches painting on board was created by collaging a canvas of Lakewood Painted and oil sharpies to create the framing of a freaky, flat snake.
Have you sold any of your artworks? How?
Surprisingly enough, I have sold more artwork through social venues such as Facebook than at my shows. The most work I sold was when featured as ARTIST OF THE MONTH ~ MARCH, at the Grand Opening Gala of the Cleveland Art Market. I sold a total of 8 pieces that night.
How do you promote your art on the internet?
Through my website, entering online art competitions, patience in working with a site like this and submissions, as well as, Facebook.
Influences
The Lord, my husband, my children and my friends
Lakewood Painted © Debra Purcell
This is a 24x36 inches acrylic on canvas painting that represent the diversity of culture and activities within the city I live, Lakewood, Ohio on the great lake, Lake Erie.
Please recommend another artist you admire, and tell us a little about them:
Frida Kaylo inspires me. Words cannot explain how her works effect my soul.
Tell us something interesting in your life
I have no formal training in the arts. It was a fluke I started painting and discovered the gift I had been given.
If you could live your life over again, would there be anything you would do differently?
Absolutely nothing! Everything I have done or has happened was for a reason. We must live our lives forward only to see it in hindsight.
Sea Level © Debra Purcell
This 26x16 inches acrylic on board painting represents where man and nature unite. "I want to live under the sea in an octopus's garden with you."
What plans do you have for the future of your art?
Its all in God's hands.
Do you have any good advice for emerging artists?
PATIENCE and DISCIPLINE to keep going. Spend a few hours a day just on the marketing and promoting of yourself. We have to be our biggest fans!

We are the proud owners of two of your pieces, and they displayed in places of honor in our home. ReplyDeleteI love the richness of your paintings. so much detail and filling up the canvas. it really involves me and brings me in. congrats on discovering your gift and obviously developing it. keep going! cheers!
ReplyDeleteyour paintings have a fullness, a richness, which I really like. it is so effective to use giant octopus, fish, etc - as the representative images of underwater life. these realistic figures portrayed in an unrealistic way is very powerful but very childlike, innocent at the same time. really nice. best of luck! keep going!
