Peter Dunckelmann
Melbourne, Australia
Mediums: Digital photography, prints on paper
Style: Abstract
Favorite Quote: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler." Einstein
Favorite Book: Too many to mention. One fascinating book I read recently: Roberto BolaƱo, "2666."
Favorite Movie: anything by Pedro Almodovar.
For my art the computer is more important than the camera. I manipulate photos digitally. I don't call myself a photographer anymore.
Creating as a child
As a child I was given charcoal and sketched some trees which grew in the garden.
Music and Art
Depending on mood or the work creating I listen to Jazz, or Blues, or Classical music.
Do you have a job outside of art?
I am a full time artist.
What are you trying to convey to viewers through your art?
My interest is the picture, not the meaning. An artist creates images after his or her imagination, in the course of this everything is allowed what the artist imagines.
Creative Process
Driven and motivated to find creative outcomes, I use the computer as a tool and am comfortable working on it like a painter using a brush, for instance. In visual expressions I love finding new ways to make images and for unexpected things to happen. I have a liking for abstract forms and try to explore a lot more with colour. Without fear of rules, conventions, or technical limitations, mixing different techniques and visual influences into my work.
Inspirations
I am a flaneur. While walking around town anything inspires me; Shapes, Colours, Textures.
I love the chance to make something, manipulate my photographs, get excited about shadows and shapes and what to do with them, get ideas, being inspired by it for future works. Don't think, just do!
Exhibitions
In the past I had the opportunity to show some of my work at public galleries.
Have you been selling your art?
I have sold my works to private collectors at gallery shows.
How have you been promoting art online?
Displaying images, contacting art magazines.
Influences
I try not to be influenced, bought a computer and software, taught myself so I tend to have no rules to break and no "standard manual" in my mind.
Can you recommend another artist?
I admire the late American artist Georgia O'Keeffe. Her usage of colors and pattern in her unique images is just amazing.
Can you relate some interesting events in your life?
Travelling was a great pastime of mine, visiting many countries throughout Asia, Middle East, Europe, Pacific island nations.
Embarrassing moments
Everyone in his/her life experiences embarrassing moments.
If you could live your life over again, would there be anything you would do differently?
I only wish the digital technology would have appeared earlier in my life.
Future Plans
Looking forward to advances in hardware and software technologies to use these things in a creative fashion.
Do you have any good advice for emerging artists?
Never give up. Continue working, realizing your dreams in your preferred medium.
